The AWWA ColourBook application was designed specifically to support children with special needs, providing a creative learning tool that combined interactive play with therapeutic engagement. Texture designed the UX and UI of the application with close attention to the specific needs of this audience: clear, intuitive interactions that removed barriers and let the creative experience take centre stage.
The app allowed children to colour interactive objects that were then brought to life as animated displays on a large screen, creating an immediate and rewarding feedback loop between the child's input and a visible result. Following the success of the initial launch, AWWA extended the experience with two additional scenes, expanding the content available and giving the application long-term depth.
The interface was built specifically for children with special needs, which meant every interaction had to be immediately legible without explanation. Frictionless, not simplified, the UX was designed so that children could engage independently at their own pace, without requiring a carer or staff member to guide each step. Accessibility was not a constraint applied after the fact; it was the design brief from the start.
The feedback loop between a child's colouring input and the animated result on the large screen was designed to be immediate and clearly connected. Seeing the object they had just coloured come to life in front of them was the reward: concrete, joyful, and personal. The immediacy of the response was as important as the quality of the animation.
The application was built to grow. Two additional scenes were integrated after the initial launch, extending the content available without requiring a rebuild, and giving children who returned to the programme something new to engage with. For an audience that benefits from consistency of environment but also needs renewal to stay engaged, that extensibility was a meaningful design consideration.
