The Rangoli Movement

The Rangoli Movement was a Precinct Art Activation in Little India that marked the first large-scale visual and digital showcase of Indian art in Singapore. Commissioned to bring traditional Indian art forms to a broader and younger audience, the event took Rangoli, the South Asian practice of creating intricate floor patterns using coloured powder, sand, or rice, as its creative and cultural anchor.

We designed and built a digital tent structure in the heart of Little India where traditional Indian folk songs played as visitors stepped onto illuminated dance pads. Each pad triggered vibrant Rangoli projections that rose and filled the ceiling with colour and movement, translating an ancient art form into a physical, participatory experience. The patterns changed with every dancer, making each session a unique display where movement itself was the generative act.

For visitors who preferred not to dance, we built a mobile colouring experience allowing anyone to contribute to an evolving digital Rangoli artwork from their phone. Alongside the installations, community workshops were held each week led by Madam Vijaya Mohan, a Guinness World Record holder in Rangoli art, who taught the practice to new audiences and passed its knowledge forward.

Interactive Dance Pads

Illuminated pads on the dance floor responded to movement, triggering vibrant Rangoli projections that rose to fill the ceiling of the tent structure. Every visitor's movement created a unique pattern, making participation the generative act rather than simply a trigger.

Mobile Colouring Experience

A complementary digital activity allowing visitors to add colour to a shared evolving Rangoli design from their own phone, ensuring everyone could contribute to the artwork regardless of whether they chose to dance.

Community Workshop Series

Weekly workshops led by Madam Vijaya Mohan, a Guinness World Record holder in Rangoli, gave visitors a chance to learn the traditional art form directly from a master practitioner, grounding the digital experience in genuine cultural transmission.
